6-Day Alaska Itinerary

Day #1 - Town of Craig on Prince of Wales Island to Steamboat Bay

The town of Craig is a sleepy little fishing village that has a long history as a commercial fishing port. The town has been frequented by commercial fishermen for years and has recently begun to see more tourism, due to the exceptional fishing in the area. The town has approximately 1,800 permanent residents. Float plane access is easy as there are 3 major carriers out of the nearby town of Ketchikan. A walk down the dock in Craig can provide entertainment for hours. Local fishermen are frequently working on their trollers and commercial fishing boats. These people work hard and take pride in their boats - they are often very happy to give you a tour of their prized vessel. The 24' boats will pick you up at the city dock and transport you to The Lost Coast Explorer. Drop off your bags and go out on the town! The Lost Coast Explorer departs Criag around 6:00 pm for a dinner cruise to your overnight location: Steamboat Bay on Noyes Island. Steamboat Bay is home to the abandoned Steamboat Bay Cannery. This location provides us with access to the best fishing grounds in the area, which are only10 minutes away! You can also take a step back in time and do a tour of the cannery grounds.

Day #2 - Steamboat Bay to Warren Island and Coronation Island and the Warren/Coronation Wilderness Areas

Pick your activity and cruise. This is a great area to sea kayak with the whales and sea lions. Fishing is phenomenal between Steamboat Bay and Warren Island, and the cruise through the Merielle Island wilderness is absolutely pristine. Meet up with The Lost Coast Explorer at Warren Island that afternoon for some clam digging on your private white sand beach.

Day #3 - Warren Island to Wrangell Narrows and Petersburg

On the morning of day three you can fish, go whale watching, or go see the puffin nesting grounds in the Coronation Island Wilderness Area. If you wish to go for a day hike, we recommend the old growth forest on Coronation Island - where there is a tremendous population of Sitka black tail deer. After your activities in this area are done for the day we will cruise through Sumner Straights, where we will join The Lost Coast Explorer. While we are in the area, we will make sure to stop at the small village of Point Baker for a quick tour and some of the local pie served there in the convenience store. A short jump across the channel will rejoin us with the yacht for an evening cruise through the Wrangell Narrows. During this two-hour cruise you will be winding your way through an extremely tight channel surrounded by old growth forest. Dine out on the back deck, relax, and enjoy the view as we cruise onto Petersburg.

Day #4 - Petersburg to Pybus Bay

Wake up in the morning to a new day and a new adventure. Start off your day by joining our guides as they travel up to see the glaciers. Don't forget the sea kayaks! From there, you can pick your activity from a list provided by our staff and work your way up through Fredrick Sound - fishing, hiking, river running, or bear viewing along the way.

Day #5 - Pybus Bay to Warm Springs

This is the land of the Jumbo Halibut. Strap on the fighting belt and tie into one of these bruisers! The eagles are plentiful here, and there is never a time of the day without an activity. After playing all day you can look forward to an evening of dining and relaxation in the natural hot springs that give this area its name. Soak in the rejuvenating waters before another sound night's sleep aboard The Lost Coast Explorer.

Day #6 - Warm Springs to Sitka

In the morning you can stay at the hot springs as long as you wish or set out for another day of exciting activities. The channel that leads to Sitka is a beautiful ride, whether you choose to enjoy the scenery from The Lost Coast Explorer or aboard one of the 24' cabin cruisers. You may also choose to run directly to the Sitka area in the morning and take advantage of the world-class fishing the Sitka area offers. We will pull into Sitka in the evening of this 6th day. Sitka is a small oceanside fishing community surrounded by mountains in all directions. The town was originally settled by the Tlingit Indians and was the first trading post for the Russian settlers in Southeast Alaska.

Day #7 - Sitka

With its rich history and beautiful location, Sitka is a town that should not be missed. Surf enthusiasts should bring a wet suit and paddle into one of the six great breaks in this area. Today Sitka is one of the largest towns in Southeast Alaska, and has a thriving nightlife that can be enjoyed by guests in the evening. The fishing is Sitka is also phenomenal. Sitka intercepts huge migrations of Salmon that pass by every year, traveling to different locations up and down the coast. According to Alaska Department of Fish and Game, this is one of the most consistent fisheries in Alaska. Enjoy the view of Mount Edgecombe while landing one salmon after another.

Day #8 - Sitka

Depart the Lost Coast Explorer aboard the 24' Orcas and transfer to the Sitka Airport.
